Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, is attempting to recover approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets stolen during a massive cyberattack believed to be linked to North Korean hackers. The incident, reported on October 30, 2026, is being described as potentially the largest cryptocurrency theft in history.
According to blockchain intelligence firms, the attackers transferred approximately $6.36 billion from Binance wallets across multiple blockchain networks. Most of the stolen funds were reportedly moved within just 20 minutes, highlighting the scale and sophistication of the operation.
Binance has confirmed that it has worked with cryptocurrency companies and blockchain security specialists to freeze approximately $3 billion of the affected assets. However, billions of dollars remain unaccounted for, with investigators continuing to trace the stolen cryptocurrency.
Several cybersecurity and blockchain analysis firms, including TRM Labs and Elliptic, have linked the attack to TraderTraitor, a North Korean hacking group associated with the Lazarus Group. Researchers believe the attack shares similarities with previous cryptocurrency thefts attributed to North Korean cybercriminal networks.
Binance initially suspected that an engineer’s laptop had been compromised, allowing attackers to gain access to internal systems and initiate unauthorized withdrawals. Further investigations revealed additional points of breach, suggesting that the operation was more complex than initially understood.
Following the incident, Binance temporarily suspended certain withdrawal services while conducting security checks. The company has assured customers that their funds are safe and promised to cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and company resources.
Law enforcement agencies, including the US Secret Service and FBI, are coordinating with industry partners to trace and recover the stolen assets.
The incident has raised serious questions about cryptocurrency security, exchange vulnerabilities and international cybercrime. The investigation remains ongoing as Binance continues efforts to recover the missing billions.
